Hop Update

Willamette: 1st vine is 59 inches tall, second one is about 36 inches. A third vine was starting to come up, so I plucked it and replanted it to see what will happen with it, so far it has lived three days. The leaves are getting eaten by something.

Nugget: 30 inches tall, second vine about 20 inches. Nothing seems to be eating the leaves.

I am getting a few leaves that something is eating on, as well as some small lighter blotches. I don't see any bugs or larvae during anytime of the day except maybe late night? See the images below.

We have some amazing hops growing wild outside the front of my house. This year I plan to harvest them and make beer!

Hi, Curtis,

I noticed that you live in Austin, and I wanted to pass along some information to you about Flying Saucer's upcoming second annual Fall Beer Festival in Triangle Park on Oct. 24 from noon to 10 p.m.

The Fall Beer Festival will feature five beer tasting tents plus a full-pint tent, each with at least four brews chosen by Flying Saucer’s own resident beer guru, Keith Schlabs and Austin Flying Saucer general manager Ted Rowell. Featured beers will include rare special releases and cask-conditioned ales, including Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale and cask-conditioned North Coast Red Seal Ale in the West Coast tent and Avery Dugana IPA, cask-conditioned Breckenridge 471 IPA and Boulevard Smokestack Tank 7 in the UR Not Worthy tent. The Captain’s Picks tent is scheduled to feature, among others, a brew made by Captain Keith at Sierra Nevada’s recent beer camp. The brew, called Sierra Nevada Edge of Darkness, will be offered in a very limited supply.

Admission to the event is free, but for $15, event goers will receive a commemorative glass and tasting card that can be redeemed for a sampling of 10 of the 30 featured beers. Brats, kraut, Bavarian pretzels and Sno-Cones also will be available, and the festival will feature a dunking booth for contestants to throw Frisbees® at a target, with a portion of proceeds going to Austin-based not-for-profit Planet Cancer.
